On Monday, NBC News reported the status of abortion in the United States, and according to interviews they had with pro-abortion advocates, things are looking up for the pro-life movement.
Gretchen Borchelt, vice president of reproductive rights and health for the National Women’s Law Center, a pro-abortion group, said, “For abortion, it’s really a crisis moment, and everything is on the line with a new Supreme Court.”
On the other hand, Mallory Quigley, vice president of communication at Susan B. Anthony List said, “There is renewed hope for pro-life state legislators that the handcuffs will soon be taken off of the states so they can enact policy that’s consistent with values of the population.” She added, “We’re going to do everything that we can to make some gains in the legislature.”
Since Roe v. Wade was ruled on in 1973 by the U.S. Supreme Court, over 61 million babies have been killed through abortion, according to Texas Right to Life’s 2020 estimate.
NBC News reports, “If Roe v. Wade were weakened or overturned,” abortion would be accessible “in less than half of the states and none of the U.S.”
Across the country, from Texas to Massachusetts, pro-abortion and pro-life legislation has been proposed and enacted that could be what it takes for Roe v. Wade to finally fall, sending the abortion decision back to all 50 states.
With the addition of Justice Amy Coney Barrett by President Donald Trump, the Supreme Court may very well have the votes to overturn Roe if the Court is willing to take up a case that could chip away or dismantle it.
