Newsom announced Monday, via Tweet, that the state would be stockpiling the abortion drug Misoprostol. The state cut its contract with Walgreens last month, as the pharmacy giant announced it would not be stocking abortion pills. Now on the heels of a national abortion pill decision and the federal court decision in Texas suspending FDA approval of Mifepristone, California seems to be really sweating it.

California vs. Walgreens

California decided to not renew its $54 million contract with Walgreens last month as the chain decided not to dispense abortion pills in the state, even though they are legal there. Newsom announced in early March that the state would not be conducting business with Walgreens after the national pharmacy chain announced it would not distribute mifepristone, an abortion pill, in 20 states due to legal threats from conservative attorneys general. In response, Newsom criticized Walgreens’ decision and stated that California will not work with any company that “cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk.”

Stockpiling Misoprostol

Now a month later, the state secured 2 million Misoprostol pills. This comes in the wake of the federal court decision in Texas in which the court suspended the FDA’s approval of the abortion drug Mifepristone. In that case, the judge held that “the FDA had not followed its own scientific protocols when mifepristone was approved two decades ago. Instead, it had defined pregnancy as an “illness” so it could accelerate the rollout of the drug.”

Newsom Hopping Into Hot Water

While pro-life advocates have remained upset over California and Governor Newsom, the state is seeming to find fault with the Governor who has raised 2024 rumors. California has watched a record amount of rain and snow wash out to sea after three years of extreme drought. This winter trillions of gallons of water have fallen onto the state, enough for decades of use IF it had been stored properly. Though with Newsom’s priority remaining on pills to kill babies and fights with Walgreens, the Governor failed to fix water infrastructure that would have been a positive thing for decades of Californians. A situation that even liberals are “canceling” Newsom for.
