On Sunday, pro-life conservative politician Guillermo Lasso officially won the presidency of Ecuador, defeating left-leaning economist Andres Arauz 52.4% to 47.4%. He will take office on May 24, 2021.

Lasso previously ran for president of Ecuador in 2013 and 2017, however, he came short in a runoff against exiting President Lenin Moreno in 2017.

“It is a historic day,” Lasso said in a statement. “Today, we begin to work harder than ever to build the country that we all want and deserve.”

“This won’t be the government of Guillermo Lasso, of CREO [his Creating Opportunities right-wing movement], of one party in particular. It is a government of national unity, of meeting, of recognising there are causes, there are struggles that we need to respect democratically even if personally we think differently,” said Lasso.

According to NBC News, “Ecuador is deep in a recession that many fear will worsen as lockdowns return because of a spike in COVID-19 cases. Ecuador has tallied more than 344,000 cases and over 17,200 deaths as of Sunday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University in the United States.”

But Lasso wants to grow jobs, saying on the campaign trail, “Our goal will be to create two million jobs in the next four years of government and that way we’ll have more than five in every 10 Ecuadoreans working.”

Lasso is an uncompromising pro-lifer, who said in 2020 that he “believes in life from conception and that is a principle I will not change” when asked “about the weight that his religious beliefs will have in the definition of public policies on issues such as family planning or abortion in case of rape.”
