Manchester, NH – A former Boston Red Sox pitcher’s adopted daughter gave birth in the woods where she was apparently living. Her baby was found by police alone and unclothed in a tent Sunday night. It was about 18 degrees at the time.

The baby was struggling to breathe when rescuers arrived. Members of the local fire department tried to warm the infant as much as possible. The child was taken to a nearby hospital and is doing well, according to a Tuesday ABC news report.

Alexandra Eckersley, 26, was arraigned Tuesday at Hillsboro Superior Court-North. Charges include endangering the welfare of a child, falsifying physical evidence, second-degree assault, and reckless conduct.

Possibly under the influence of drugs, Eckersley gave the police multiple locations before finally telling the authorities that the baby was in the tent where she was living. Eckersley also alleged that she did not know she was pregnant at the time.

Eckersley allegedly told EMTs that “she had no idea she was pregnant and that she felt she had to use the bathroom,” according to an affidavit. She went on to estimate giving birth to the child sometime late Christmas night.

Dennis Eckersley, Alexandra’s adoptive father, is a former Red Sox pitcher. He played on and off for eight seasons and worked in broadcast.

The incident remains an open investigation.
