The CEO of CompassCare, a pregnancy help center in Buffalo, New York, contacted the FBI in February about another potential attack during uproar from pro-abortion groups related to access to abortion pills. The Rev. Jim Harden had asked if the FBI planned to issue any threat alerts or provide additional security protection to the judge handling the case, but received no response.
Despite these concerns, CompassCare was attacked for the second time in nine months on Wednesday when an individual wearing a hoodie spray painted the word “Liars” over the center’s sign. Harden called the incident an act of domestic terror and criticized the FBI and DOJ for failing to take action against pro-abortion activists who attack pro-life organizations and churches.
The first attack occurred in June when a pro-abortion group called Jane’s Revenge claimed responsibility for firebombing the center and spray painting the words “Jane was here” on the building. The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE Act) makes it illegal to intentionally damage or destroy reproductive health care facilities, including both abortion clinics and pregnancy centers. In 2022, President Joe Biden’s DOJ charged 26 pro-life activists with FACE Act violations, but did not charge any pro-abortion activists despite reports of over 100 attacks on pro-life pregnancy centers and churches across the country.
Harden’s concerns about potential attacks were not unfounded, and the latest incident at CompassCare underscores the need for increased protection of pro-life organizations and churches. It is unacceptable that pro-life activists are being targeted and attacked without repercussions, while pro-abortion activists are not being held accountable for their actions. The FBI and DOJ must take a more proactive approach to ensuring the safety of those who work at and utilize pregnancy help centers and other pro-life organizations.
