Twirl, a dance studio in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, lives by their motto “All for dance, dance for all.” The owner, Sam Sinns, is a professional dancer who opened the studio in 2016 to pass on his wisdom and knowledge to the next generation. Twirl’s class for individuals with Down syndrome features multiple styles of dance, including jazz and musical theatre dance styles, and features an end-of-the-year show.

Sinns’ very first class at the studio was a Down syndrome dance class, which is specifically designed for individuals with the genetic condition. The class has grown to include 21 dancers who meet every week, including Jayden Pappa. Pappa’s grandmother, Joan Snyder, wanted to fuel her grandson’s love for dance and found that the class provided the perfect opportunity for him to exercise and move around while having fun.

According to Sinns, the choreography for the Down syndrome dance class helps with memory, gross motor skills, coordination, and increases heart rate. It provides an opportunity for individuals with Down syndrome to be involved and have something that is just for them. Sinns’ goal is to create a happy place where everyone feels welcomed and valued.

Twirl now has over 400 students and Sinns’ unique program for students of all abilities has made it an inclusive and welcoming space for all dancers. The studio provides an opportunity for individuals with Down syndrome to express themselves through dance and feel a sense of belonging within the community. As one student, Jayden Pappa, put it, “I love Sam so much. He’s a good dancer.”
