North Dakota’s Republican Governor, Doug Burgum, has signed into law a bill which bans abortions on all babies with beating hearts. The move makes the state one of the most pro-life in the country. The law bans abortions at six weeks of pregnancy when a baby’s heart can be detected. Governor Burgum stated that the law “clarifies and refines existing state law” and reaffirms North Dakota as a pro-life state.

The bill was passed by North Dakota state senators last Wednesday. Republican Sen. Janne Myrdal, of Edinburg, supported the bill and said, “North Dakota has always been pro-life and believed in valuing the moms and children both. We’re pretty happy and grateful that the governor stands with that value.”

Notably, North Dakota no longer has any abortion clinics. The state’s only facility, the Red River Women’s Clinic, closed last summer in Fargo and moved operations just across the border to Moorhead, Minnesota, where abortion remains legal.

It’s worth noting that the North Dakota law is designed to take effect immediately, but a previous abortion ban in the state was blocked by the state Supreme Court last month while a lawsuit over its constitutionality proceeds. However, lawmakers have now passed the latest bill as a signal to the state’s high court, indicating the desire of the people of North Dakota to protect the unborn.
