A new Kansas bill will penalize doctors in the state who do not provide enough care to infants delivered alive in some abortions. This new bill won approval in the state Tuesday through the help of the State’s Republican lead legislature. After it won the House’s approval 86-36 it went to Senate where it won 31-9 last week. The overwhelming majority the bill received means that it would override a Governor’s veto as it has already reached a two-thirds majority.

According to 1350kman,

“The legislation faces an uncertain fate in a legal and political climate that’s made Kansas an outlier on abortion policy among states with GOP-led legislatures. The bill applies not only to “botched” or “unsuccessful” abortions but also when doctors induce labor to deliver a fetus that is expected to die within minutes or even seconds outside the womb, which often occurs because of a severe medical issue.”

Three Kansas House Republicans stated that “We can have differing views on abortion and still agree on the need for this legislation as a humanitarian issue,” after news spread of the bill’s widespread approval. For now, the only thing that can stop this bill, and the great legislation it brings, is lawsuits. A 2015 ban the state attempted to bring was shut down after lawsuits prevented its enforcement.
