On Saturday police in Cleveland, Ohio found newborn twins dead in a garbage can. While it has not been confirmed a neighbor in the area had told local news outlet WOIO that a landscaper was the one to find the babies as he was working in a yard. Though Stg. Jennifer Ciaccia from Cleveland Homicide Police Unit told PEOPLE that the suspected mother, a 16-year-old, has been located and taken to a hospital for care.

The mother of the twins, who are believed to have been found two days after they were born, is believed to be a 16-year-old female. This teen has been taken to a local hospital for medical treatment and police are working to create a case to take to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office. Neighbors in the area have revealed that Thursday late into the night they heard cries coming from the area but had just thought the babies were waiting to be fed. Who would have thought they would have been left for dead in a trashcan?

The teen’s mom has claimed that she did not know her daughter was pregnant. Sadly, Ohio has a law that could have prevented it all. According to PEOPLE, in Ohio, parents who do not feel they can keep their baby, within the first 30 days of a newborn’s life, can drop their baby off at a “local safe haven with no penalty.”
