Vice President Kamala Harris faced a public backlash when she seemed to call for decreasing population to facilitate cleaner air and water during a speech at Coppin State University, Baltimore, Maryland. According to her office, who quickly looked to do damage control, the vice president was attempting say “pollution” instead. They even released a corrected version of her statement which emphasized that clean energy and electric vehicles would help cut down pollution.

Harris stated:

“When we invest in clean energy and electric vehicles and reduce population, more of our children can breathe clean air and drink clean water,”

This blunder follows another from earlier in the week when Harris attempted to elucidate artificial intelligence (AI) at a meeting with labor and civil rights leaders. In a less than eloquent explanation, she described AI as a “fancy thing” that’s essentially about machine learning, a definition which might have oversimplified a complex topic.
