A family in Massachusetts is grieving the loss of Ariana Sutton, a 36-year-old mother of three who died by suicide after giving birth to twins. Ariana’s husband, Easton police officer Tyler Sutton, was left to care for their newborns, Everly Irene and Rowan Stephen, while also grieving the loss of his wife.

Ariana’s family said that she struggled with postpartum depression (PPD) after the births of her twins, which put an immense strain on her mental health. Despite her relentless efforts to seek help, the burden of PPD became too much to bear. According to the National Institute of Health, about one in seven people develop PPD after giving birth. Unlike “baby blues,” which goes away after a couple of weeks, this form of depression tends to last longer and severely affects women’s ability to return to normal function.

Ariana’s family wants to raise awareness around PPD to prevent others from experiencing the same tragedy.

“It’s so important that you ask for help,” said Catherine Sutton, Ariana’s sister-in-law, during an interview with The Enterprise. “If another family’s able to avoid what we’re going through right now, it’s worth it to share our story.”

Ariana was known as a gentle, kind human being whose greatest joy was spending time with her family. She co-owned the Starline Academy for the Performing Arts in Stoughton with her sister for the past eight years and continued working there after becoming a mother.

Her death has left her family and friends shattered.

“Our hearts are broken as we navigate life without Ariana, an irreplaceable member of our family,” said Kiley Sutton, Ariana’s sister-in-law, in a Facebook post on Monday.

Tyler has “a long road ahead of him,” according to Easton police Chief Keith Boone. He asked others to educate themselves about the impacts of PPD.

“If another family can avoid the tragedy that Tyler and his twins are facing, it’s worth it to share this story,” he said.
